Environmental and Economic impact
From an environmental and economic impact perspective, firstly we will assess the reduction in CO2 emissions and energy consumption from food processing in our pilot site.
Less energy required to heat up water results in reductions in the use of charcoal, in turns lessening the impacts on deforestation in Zambia. We will explore with our stakeholders how the reduction in the operating cost of food production could translate in a potential reduction in the price of food for consumers, and/or increased investment in corporate social responsibility initiatives.
From a business perspective, we are working on new business models in the Zambian food and beverages sector with involved stakeholders, such as Zambeef plc, Coca-cola Beverages Zambia and Mt Meru Ltd which embed in-business cultural change, shifting attention towards other sustainability innovations. These new business models will facilitate and support Zambian companies to achieve ESG targets and secure new environment related investments.
Job creation from WWHR system construction, installation, monitoring, operation and maintenance.
We expect the project will demonstrate how to bring improvements in business sustainability, profitability and employment prospects in the food sector in Zambia. We recognise that broader awareness of the potential for renewable heat production, CO2 and air pollution emissions reduction is necessary and we have therefore designed and organised a number of events to raise awareness and generate commitment from company in Zambia to explore our solution.
In the future, we have plans to create of transnational innovation networks, with potential spillover effects.
